Emma Taylor, the senior manager for national graduate talent acquisition at Deloitte Australia, has a few tips for students who are interested in pursuing a career with the firm.

Application advice for graduates

What is the best way to get into your graduate program?

A good foot in the door is through one of our undergraduate programs that may lead to a permanent graduate role. Our summer vacation program, for example, involves spending three to eight weeks in one of our service lines and getting a taste for what it’s really like to work in a leading professional services firm – with the possibility of skipping the queue for a final year graduate placement.

What about timing?

The market is competitive so it is crucial to be aware of key dates for applications and ensure you get your application in early.

What type of grads are you looking for?

We are open to applicants with varying degrees and backgrounds, including bachelors of business/commerce, law, engineering, information technology/systems and design.

How can I stand out?

We are looking for people that are naturally inquisitive and passionate about their future and show genuine interest in our business and our leaders. You will stand out if you have done thorough research around our business and client offerings.

Anything else?

We recommend having an up-to-date and professional LinkedIn profile and a good social media presence.

What are some key attributes of successful candidates?

  • Strong team players
  • Self-motivated
  • Driven
  • Commercially aware
  • Be able to deal with adversity and see it is an opportunity
  • Enjoy communicating within the organisation and with clients.
