The Amadeus Asia story

Amadeus Asia Ltd started operations in Bangkok in 1995 as the regional office of the Spain-based Amadeus IT Group. It is a technology solutions provider for the travel and tourism industry. Among its services are booking, pricing and ticketing, managing reservations and check-ins, and departure processes. Customers include airlines, travel agencies, airports, ferry operators, cruise lines, hotels, corporations, car rental companies, ground handlers and insurance companies.

Located in Bangkok’s embassy district, Amadeus Asia capitalises on Thailand’s burgeoning travel and tourism sector which grew by 6% in 2018. However, the continued growth of the industry-led the country’s airports and popular destinations to nearly reach its capacity. The company teamed up with government agencies and local businesses to provide real-time analysis and predictive modelling technology via its Smart Mobility solutions to better manage and sustain the travel and tourism sector.

The recruitment process

To submit their online application, graduates must sign up on the company’s recruitment portal and create an account. The response time from the company’s Talent Acquisition team can take up to two months.  When selected, they will expect either a phone or a webcam interview. The next step is candidates will take online tests in reading comprehension, abstract and logic, math and English, and IQ skills.

If they pass the test, they will be invited to meet with the Talent Acquisition team at the Bangkok office. Questions that are related to the candidates’ personality and behaviour will be asked. These may include:

  • Tell me about yourself.
  • What is your greatest accomplishment?
  • How do you define success?
  • What are your goals for the future?
  • How would you describe yourself?
  • Why do you want to work at our company?
  • What makes you different from other candidates?

The final stage in the hiring process is the interview with the department head who will ask job-related questions which may include:

  • What can you contribute to the organisation?
  • What was the last project you handled and what was the outcome?
  •  Describe your work style.

Career prospects

In collaboration with Madrid’s IE Business School, the company implemented the Amadeus’ global mentoring programme where training on behavioural fitness and positive leadership is provided. Subjects on leadership, habit hacking and user experience design are addressed to enhance their skills and knowledge.

Amadeus likewise came out with a functional mentoring template and toolkit. This provides the basis for arranging and formalising mentoring activities within the departments. It benefits both junior and senior professionals, as well as providing autonomy to the functions to expand their mentoring offering as needed.

In addition, employees will benefit from the company’s 1,200 learning opportunities including face-to-face, virtual and online training sessions on soft and hard skills, covering individual and business needs. Development programs for employees at all levels are also provided in the entire organisation.

The culture

The work environment is reported to be collaborative as coworkers trust one another and hold each other responsible. Management also is said to be supportive and encourage the staff to express their opinion to ensure daily operations run smoothly.

The organisation also encourages regular communication among employees to help them connect with the company’s goals and strategies. To empower them and drive their performance, it regularly informs the employees about the plans, the customers, the market and technology landscape, and key events.

Social contributions

Amadeus Asia collaborated with the United Nation’s children’s organisation UNICEF and Finland-based airline company Finnair to support the world’s underprivileged children. Passengers can make donations to UNICEF and support education for children in Asia when booking their online flights on Finnair. Donations will fund UNICEF’s ‘Schools for Asia’ initiative which supports education for the most vulnerable children in 11 countries in Asia.

The vibe of the place

At Amadeus, employees will find themselves working with enthusiasm in a dynamic work environment that enhances creativity and innovative thinking. The office buildings in which it operates have synergetic space design, contributing to better work concentration and productivity.

However, the reported slow career growth in the organisation may affect employee loyalty and the chances of them leaving their jobs for better pay.
