Pros & Cons

  • Great work culture, really good opportunities for training/development and to try other roles, lots of potential for internal promotions and movement to different areas in the company, option for FIFO rosters so you dont have to live away from partner/family, excellent pay, and work benefits (share plus, discounts, superannuation) are an added plus.
  • Support and inclusivity
  • So many opportunities and can see so many pathways for the future
  • The Graduate community and company culture. The entire time I have worked here, I have felt enabled and that support is accessible.
  • It is an incredible place to work, a lot of diversity in what you can get experience/exposure in, and an endless amount of opportunities to step up and take on additional responsibilities, and work with teams of amazing people.
  • There is a chance that you will have to live remotely. Some people love it, but others don't.
  • Hours of work are extremely long and often get mentally and physically fatigued
  • There is a lot of red tape that, though necessary, can slow processes down
  • Blessing in disguise - sometimes hard to navigate where you would like to end up in the future due to the number of potential opportunities available within the company.
  • There are the good and bad sides to being in a very large company

There is definitely job opportunities available post-graduate program. It appears that a lot of what it takes to move up is based around your attitude and willingness to learn/take on challenges etc.

Culture
Everyone in the department are great. Everyone is treated the same. We have weekly social outings which are fun and a good way to make friends with your department. Cooperation is great as well. Everyone realizes that we need to work as a team to keep the mine safe and running smoothly.

Diversity

Diversity
Internal communities are set up to support diverse groups within the company. These communities have funding for events, providing support and raising awareness. BHP has a strong commitment to employing Indigenous peoples and also supporting local indigenous businesses in the Pilbara and throughout Australia which is great to see.

Satisfaction
As a part of a graduate program, I have the great benefit of learning a variety of different roles. My day-to-day responsibilities often include engagement with people of other teams either chasing information or keeping in contact about progressing projects. In my current role I am currently getting to draw up and design drill and blast plans. I love getting to see the mine in a 3D space. It is also a part of the role to get out into the field regularly with those in execution to better understand how the mine actually functions in reality and not just in the ideal design state.

Managers very accessible no matter who you are. BHP has great culture of being able to reach out to anyone in the business and receive assistance or advice, whether that be on roles or projects.

Office Work Environment
For city location, the office is spacious and clean with good amenities and a coffee machine that makes yummy hot chocolates, dress code varies depending on team/meetings, generally business/smart casual with causal dress on Fridays. For site locations, offices tend to be rather dirty from dust but get cleaned daily due to being in a dusty environment, dress code on site is always high vis PPE.

Recruitment

Recruitment
Starts with submitting a resume and cover letter followed by psychometric testing. If you pass the tests, you get invited to video recorded interviews. These are fine because they give you multiple chances to record your answer. Final stage is virtual interview with a manager or superintendent. Traditional 'STAR' questions like - Tell us a time you faced a technical problem and how you worked through it - Tell us a time you worked in a group to meet a deadline - Tell us a time you made a mistake and the follow on - Tell us a time you worked on a safety issue etc Also more job specific questions - Why do you want this role/why are you a good fit/what will your past experiences bring etc Research about what the company's values are and how they work. Have a good answer to 'tell me about yourself'. Have good examples from uni or jobs about leadership, teamwork, conflict management etc.

Working FIFO the hours are quite long, though that does come with the territory. My company is pretty open to the option of flexible working hours.

BHP is aiming for net zero by 2050. There are sustainability plans in place to reduce GHG emissions by a certain percentage each year and trialing autonomous vehicles to reduce emissions.
