The main reason I was interested in working at Gallagher was the opportunity to join a global business with great potential for career growth.

What's your job about?

The Gallagher Graduate Program is designed to enable students to develop the skills and knowledge needed to build a successful career in the Insurance Industry. During the program I have rotated every three months, working in various teams including, Corporate, Mid-Market, Professional and Financial Risks, Marine, Sport and Marketing. As a graduate, my primary role is to assist Account Executives, Account Managers and Team Leaders. My daily tasks vary and include invoicing, administrative tasks, creating renewal reports and liaising with clients and insurers.

Why were you interested in working there?

The main reason I was interested in working at Gallagher was the opportunity to join a global business with great potential for career growth. It was also enticing to start my career in a graduate program so that I could be supported and mentored along the way. Being able to rotate throughout the business was also a big reason why I chose this job as it offers the chance to work across different divisions and get a feel for what you truly enjoy.

Could someone with a different background do your job?

One of the great things about Gallagher is that everyone has diverse backgrounds. Within the graduate cohort alone we all have different degrees. This offers people of all academic disciplines the opportunity to join the Insurance Industry. The graduate program is tailored for on the job learning and the business supports you in obtaining your Tier 1 in Insurance Broking (compulsory for those giving advice in insurance broking). I believe this role benefits from good interpersonal and communication skills. If you show a willingness to learn and have a positive attitude you can succeed in this role and build a great career.

What's the coolest thing about your job?

One of the coolest things about my job is the big-name clients Gallagher have. For instance, The National Rugby League (NRL) is one of our clients. When I had my rotation in the Sports team I helped work on this account and was fortunate enough to attend an event for the NSW Rugby League State of Origin team selection.

3 pieces of advice for yourself when you were a student...

  1. Take the time to work out what career you want and study something that you enjoy. I think this is so important as it helps to put you on a career path you are interested in and will be motivated for.
  2. Don’t let other people’s opinions deter you from what you want to do in life. Stay true to yourself and what you want so that you feel personally fulfilled.
  3. Don’t take life too seriously, enjoy the journey and have fun on the way. Nothing is set in stone and if you want to change something you can.
