Te Tāhuhu o te Mātauranga | Ministry of Education is the Government’s lead advisor on the National Education system for Aotearoa, New Zealand. Te Whare o te Mātauranga

Te Whare o te Mātauranga represents our Kāwanatanga role in providing a National Education system that meets the needs of ākonga across Aotearoa. As lead advisers in Education, we acknowledge the educational aspirations of both Mana Whenua and The Crown. This is depicted in our Whare Mātauranga through our ‘Maihi Māori’ and ‘Maihi Karauna’. Through the names of our rōpu within Te Whare o te Mātauranga, we are reminded of the Whakapapa and commitments that must be upheld to honour Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

We are an organisation of more than 4000 people from diverse backgrounds and cultures, working in 9 business groups, at 38 locations, in 10 regions across New Zealand.

Our programmes

In Te Tāhuhu o te Mātauranga | Ministry of Education, we aspire those early in their career to bring the diverse skills, knowledge, and experiences they already have, to the new spaces we hope to introduce them to. Along with guidance through their journey of professional career development, we focus on inspiring them to bring their whole selves to the Ministry, and we aspire to equip them with new skills to add to their own Kete Mātauranga (Basket of Knowledge).

Graduate Policy programme

This programme is for people who are interested in building a career in policy. We’re focused on delivering excellent and equitable outcomes for our increasingly diverse population and working with us gives you the chance to help shape New Zealand’s education system. Our policy community is extensive, and we have teams covering Pacific education, early childhood, Māori education, tertiary, learning support, infrastructure, international and much more. This is a great opportunity for you to contribute to improving outcomes for our whānau, communities and wider New Zealand.

Our structured 18-month development programme offers:

  • a permanent role
  • two rotations which allow you to experience different areas of policy that the Ministry provides.
  • formal training as well as on-the-job learning opportunities designed to challenge and stretch you.
  • a supportive environment where you’ll get regular feedback and guidance to help you develop.
  • a competitive salary
  • the opportunity to be promoted to Policy Analyst at the end of your programme.

Summer Internship programme

The Summer Internship Programme has provided 5 years of professional development opportunities for students. We offer a 12-week paid programme (between November and February) immersed in a professional environment with the guidance of our EIC team (early in career) and support groups assisting along the way. The opportunity to work within the Ministry extends across the wider organisation and the education sector agencies. 

The Summer Internship programme is a fantastic opportunity for you to experience working in a professional space and learn how to apply the skills and talents you already have; into the areas you will be contributing to,

Learning Support

The Learning Support area of the Ministry is charged with leading the Education sector to ensure that children and young people with additional learning needs are supported to achieve their full potential through education.

Our Learning Support specialists work closely with families, whānau, caregivers, schools and early childhood educators in English and Māori medium settings and other agencies to help maximise learning outcomes and promote social inclusion.

Pathways into Learning Support

We’re the largest employer of Educational Psychologists and one of the largest employers of Speech Language Therapists (SLT) in New Zealand. An ongoing priority for the Ministry is supporting pathways into these key positions. We offer scholarships for these programmes to open the door to a diverse and rewarding career. In this profession, you will work with a rich variety of cases and interact with schools and early learning services, parents, whānau, children and young people.
