Francis Ohwofa

This morning, I ran a quick training for the front-end shift fitter on a newly created MCIL – Master Clean, Inspect and Lubricate on the trimmer outfeed race.

4.30 AM

There goes my alarm. I get up and get ready for work.

5.30 AM

I have a soya milk drink, then pack my breakfast and lunch into my Orora lunch bag.

5.45 AM

I hop on my bicycle for a smooth and quick ride to work with my Orora lunch bag across my back. It’s great to be able to get some exercise in before I start my day!

5.55 AM

When I arrive at work, I put my breakfast and lunch in the fridge and get ready for a day full of activities.

6.00 AM

At Orora we have a huge focus on safety so my first activity for the day is to head to the front-end quiet rooms, Cafeteria and MRT office to pick up all Take Two’s done on the previous day and take a record of it. A take two is a safety process where you take two minutes to think about possible hazards before you start a task.

I also collect the front-end completed paper works (CL – centre line, DH – Defect Handling reports).

This morning, I ran a quick training for the front-end shift fitter on a newly created MCIL – Master Clean, Inspect and Lubricate on the trimmer outfeed race. This is an ongoing training we the grads are running for the front and back-end shift fitters and operators.

6.15 AM

When back at my desk I compute all reports from the paperwork collected into the IWS (Integrated Work Systems) daily direction setting board (DDS).

I also then get an opportunity to check my emails which include the previous day shift and night shift reports. This helps to bring myself up to date on how the plant is running any necessary details are also then put on the DDS board for our 7.30 am IWS meeting.

Every morning from Monday to Friday the team has an Engineering meeting where shift fitters, mechanical and electrical engineers get together to get an update on issues arising. In this meeting duties are also assigned to individuals to address any issues.

In the meeting if we discuss an unusual job for the day, I remind the team to make sure they are completing a take two before starting the job. This meeting is a great opportunity to observe and listen to an experienced team.

7.30 AM

The IWS meeting kicks off with all the top management, shift supervisors and IWS team members present. We have two IWS meetings a day. At this stage of my graduate program, I am in the IWS team too, learning all I can for the next 3 months.

The IWS board captures all reports from the previous day which includes Top stops, Top losses, KPI’s, safety Score and Quality score. It basically captures the input and output of the entire plant from the previous 24 hours.

8.00 AM

It’s time for breakfast!

This is where I re-switch myself on by energizing my muscles and brain

8.30 AM

It’s time to conduct refresher training with one of our washer operators. We are going over a newly created CIL (clean, inspect, lubricate) on the washer’s vestibule drainpipe and risers.

I have been carrying out monthly HSE inspections within the offices as well as in the plant area. This includes, checking all electrical inspection tags, fire extinguishers check dates, office furniture conditions, light fittings etc.

I then take my findings and have a discussion with our HSE supervisor about how we might rectify hazards and improve things going forward.

12.00 PM

I now go to spend some time in the plant to see what’s happening and if there is anything I can shadow and learn from.

It’s time to follow up on rectifying body makers air and oil pressure that were out of centre line.

I do this on daily basis depending on the information the operators from the previous shift complete on the “CL form.” This is among the paper works I pick up from their quiet room every morning at 6.00 am.

12.30 PM

It’s lunch time.

While having my lunch I take the time to catch up with my colleagues. We chat about what’s going on either at work or outside work.

I love this time of the day it’s always fun!

1.00 PM

Today, I started compiling 6 months of DEFECTs raised on several machines in the plant. I compile these on an excel spreadsheet which will enable us to prioritize defects. We prioritize defects that need immediate action depending on the time each will take to get fixed.
