  • Government & Public Service

As New Zealand’s national statistics office, Tatauranga Aotearoa Stats NZ is uniquely positioned to support the decisions that the Government, Māori and Iwi organisations, businesses, NGOs and New Zealanders make every day. Our structure, culture and systems are designed with collaboration and customers in mind – mobilised and working together to realise our ambition:

About Aotearoa, for Aotearoa – data that improves lives today and for generations to come.

The increased availability of data brings data-driven innovation. Insights obtained from exploring data can lead to new and creative approaches in business, public services, and customer experience – ultimately improving the wellbeing of New Zealanders. Stats NZ, as data stewards and leaders of the data eco-system, proactively protect and enhance the provision of good quality data in order to realise the value of data. Stats NZ is led by the Chief Executive who is also the Government Statistician and Government Chief Data Steward.

At Stats NZ you can expect to work with great people in a work environment where diversity is celebrated.

We offer flexible working hours, competitive salaries and generous leave entitlements. You'll have the opportunity for secondments and rotations and be able to manage your own career aspirations through our development pathways.

You can also join communities of practice that interest you, and even apply for funding to study relevant tertiary qualifications.

Stats NZ's 1,500+ employees come from a range of backgrounds - from statistics and mathematics to sociology, economics, finance, information technology, project management, customer service, relationship management, administration, human resources and more. We have offices in Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch, as well as staff working remotely across New Zealand.

We're looking for engaging people who think conceptually and innovatively, who understand the needs of others, show curiosity and tenacity, and work well within a culture of transparency and collaboration.

See our careers site to find out about “The Way We Work” which is a set of principles developed for our people, by our people! It speaks to what we care about, how we do things and what is needed for all our people to be successful within Stats NZ.

If you're keen to help us provide data that improve lives today and for generations to come, check out the current vacancies on our website.

Recruitment Process

Keep your CV concise and relevant, highlight relevant skills, qualifications, attributes and achievements. Confirm your interest in the job and organisation in your cover letter, and what you would bring. Consider what we have asked you in the advert.

Avoid acronyms where possible and cover any gaps. Don’t be afraid to show some personality and keep it real. You can check out Careers NZ for advice and preparing for an interview and a CV template.

Why are we asking you so many questions on registration and application?

  • Ethnicity and Gender information helps us to ensure we are reaching a broad and diverse range of applicants.
  • Some information is mandatory for Public Service/Government Agencies e.g. Serious misconduct and criminal conviction checks.
  • Other questions help us to ensure you can succeed in your new role.

Once you’ve created a user profile you will receive an email confirmation, and once you’ve successfully applied for a role you’ll also receive confirmation.

We use a screening matrix when reviewing applications to assist us with shortlisting. When we have large numbers of similar applications, you may be requested to complete a phone or video screen.

We aim to ensure equal employment opportunities at Stats NZ and want to make sure all applicants are treated fairly and equitably, regardless of individual differences such as disability, race, ethnic origin, age, gender, sexual orientation, marital status, ethical or religious beliefs, or family responsibilities.

We welcome overseas interest in any of our career opportunities. However, to work in New Zealand you must:

  • be a New Zealand citizen holding a New Zealand residence class visa, or
  • be an Australian citizen or an Australian resident, or
  • be a Cook Island (including Niue or Tokelau) citizen, or
  • hold a current and valid work visa.

You can find out how to get a work visa at Immigration New Zealand.

NOTE: If you have a work visa, your conditions will dictate what you can accept and what we can offer. Please check your conditions before you apply for a role.

If you are invited to an interview, this will usually involve at least two to four-panel members and may involve competency-based questions and questions specific to the role, environment and setting.

We may ask you to provide a work sample or to give a presentation as part of an interview process.

If you would like to bring a support person or have any accessibility or support requirements we can assist with, do let us know so we can prepare for and accommodate accordingly.

Depending on the vacancy, psychometric testing may be included in the recruitment process. We’ll always discuss this with you before asking you to complete such a test. Examples might include:

  • Aptitude and ability tests are designed to assess the abilities required to perform the role.
  • Personality tests can identify and highlight typical tendencies and behaviours of the person.

We conduct pre-employment checks as part of our recruitment process which includes reference checking, specific checks related to the role e.g. qualifications and licenses.

Stats NZ conducts a criminal records check (through the Ministry of Justice) for all roles, and a serious misconduct check for those who’ve worked in the Public Sector in the past 3 years before any appointment is confirmed. Any offer of employment that is made is subject to the results of these checks being satisfactory.

A criminal conviction doesn’t necessarily mean you won’t be offered employment. It will depend on the nature of the position you’re applying for and the nature of the offences that resulted in the conviction.

If you are successful in the recruitment process, you will receive an offer to review on our careers page, you can log in to complete the paperwork online.

Your Manager will be in touch prior to you starting to explain the onboarding and induction process.

Good luck with your application, we hope to see you here at Tatauranga Aotearoa Stats NZ soon!

What Graduates Say About Them
  • The people and the environment have made working at Stats NZ and getting settled in really easy. It has also calmed the nerves down in regards of starting a new job and being able to build relationships and connections with your colleagues. There is a sense of trust and friendliness where everyone is ready and more than happy to help you.
  • The people. There is no strong sense of hierarchy, and you can engage in conversation with people in more senior roles without being talked down to. The flexibility is also great!
  • The wellbeing of everyone is a priority and the allocated work for each employee is greatly divided between each. Flexibility of working helps with other life commitments
  • The people, the culture, and how everyone is very encouraging of Te Ao Māori
  • Friendly environment, culturally influenced
  • As an intern and someone who is just beginning their career it is hard to understand the lingo or acronyms that not only Stats NZ uses but other corporate or government agencies use as well.
  • The slow-pace.
  • I was one of very few graduates who started at the time I did. I can't recall any occasions for the graduates to meet/connect so I'd say that's the only downside (which could completely be an issue of timing). It would've been good to connect with people in similar situations as myself.
  • Workload can be cyclical, with busy and non-busy periods.
  • There are parts of the organisation that don't 'get' (or want to 'get') what we're doing despite support from senior and executive leadership.
