Pros & Cons

  • The people and the environment have made working at Stats NZ and getting settled in really easy. It has also calmed the nerves down in regards of starting a new job and being able to build relationships and connections with your colleagues. There is a sense of trust and friendliness where everyone is ready and more than happy to help you.
  • The people. There is no strong sense of hierarchy, and you can engage in conversation with people in more senior roles without being talked down to. The flexibility is also great!
  • The wellbeing of everyone is a priority and the allocated work for each employee is greatly divided between each. Flexibility of working helps with other life commitments
  • The people, the culture, and how everyone is very encouraging of Te Ao Māori
  • Friendly environment, culturally influenced
  • As an intern and someone who is just beginning their career it is hard to understand the lingo or acronyms that not only Stats NZ uses but other corporate or government agencies use as well.
  • The slow-pace.
  • I was one of very few graduates who started at the time I did. I can't recall any occasions for the graduates to meet/connect so I'd say that's the only downside (which could completely be an issue of timing). It would've been good to connect with people in similar situations as myself.
  • Workload can be cyclical, with busy and non-busy periods.
  • There are parts of the organisation that don't 'get' (or want to 'get') what we're doing despite support from senior and executive leadership.

A Graduate Analyst is supported into the next role up (Statistical and Data Analyst). These steps up can happen anywhere from 6-12 months. Regardless of whether the move up to the next role occurs at the 6-month mark, graduates received a pay rise.

Corporate Social Responsibility
The way we work initiative at Stats NZ encourage their employees to put people at the heart of what they do, be leaders, be curious, bring the outside in, and be a part of something that is bigger than ourselves. This enables the people at Stats to think about what they are doing and how that contributes to society.

Culture
Very impressed with the culture at Stats NZ. Most people are very friendly and approachable. There are plenty of events and networks to get involved with. Awesome opportunities to learn more about te ao Māori and practice te reo. People are very accepting of stepping away from the desks to have a kōrero, go for a walk etc.

Great courses on offer for diversity training. The environment itself is inclusive (gender diverse toilets, disabled toilets, accessible sinks etc.). The pride lanyards provide comfort for diverse people. Many networks available for different ethnic minorities.

My role is an Intern - Statistical and Data Analyst. I am gathering data and information about Māori businesses by reading through the TUM releases and other reports like Te Matapaeroa and Te Ohanga Māori. I attend meetings that my team have and make contributions through there and I also seek the feedback and help of my colleagues. I also attend events that are organised for the interns here at Stats which is insightful in knowing what other avenues there are at Stats NZ.

Management
As I am an intern my manager has made effort to organise little catch ups where we are able to see where I am at and if I need any help. In general, I think my manager is very good at looking after her team and colleagues seeing where they are at. I think manager here at Stats are very accessible and are willing to listen to you and hear what matters you have.

Office Work Environment
The office space is very open and encourages working in a team. There are spaces for you to work alone, or work with your team. The location of the office is not bad for me as it is not far from the train station. There are facilities that are for everyone, there are kitchens on every level with two levels having the kitchen facilities to heat your food or make toasties. There is a space to leave your bikes and to have showers. They have thought about everything as they have sick bay rooms and a room where you can take your children. There were a lot of planning and thinking when they designed this office.

Plenty of courses/workshops available to development further. Courses span te ao Māoori, te reo Māoori, confidentiality, diversity etc. Can be a bit hard to get involved in BAU, especially during busy periods.

Work Hours
Stats NZ is very flexible when it comes to our hours. We can start at whatever time and the length of our lunch break is up to us. All that Stats NZ asks of us is to get our 7.5 hours in each day. It allows me for example who travels to Wellington by train for an hour to leave early and do a couple of hours at home.
