What's Victoria's Big Build?

Victoria’s Big Build, we’re build state-shaping projects that will change the way that Victorians work, live and play.

Our projects include:

  • Level Crossing Removal Project – removing 110 dangerous and congested level crossings
  • Big Build Roads – easing congestion by building better roads and bridges
  • North East Link – 6.5km tunnels linking Melbourne's freeway network
  • Metro Tunnel Project – a second underground railway for Melbourne, with 5 new stations
  • West Gate Tunnel Project – building an alternative to the West Gate Bridge, which will reduce congestion and remove trucks from residential streets.

Delivering these massive projects takes multidisciplinary teams working collaboratively in a complex and creative environment. Does this sound like your ideal workplace?

About the Graduate Programs

Each year, they offer graduate roles across a wide range of disciplines.

Over a 2-year program, you'll undertake:

  • rotations in a range of business contexts (depending on your discipline and project team)
  • a structured learning and development program involving a range of professional and personal development workshops, site visits, project work, mentoring and experiential learning opportunities.
  • career planning to prepare you for the next step in your career.

During the application process you'll be asked to rank your project team preferences.

During the program, you'll develop your technical and professional skills, working alongside industry experts and learning from professionals who will be eager to help and guide you.

By joining one of our teams, you'll not only gain first-hand experience working on real projects, but you'll also be helping to make it easier for Victorians to get where they need to go quickly and safely.

We’re proud to be recognised as one of the country’s best workplaces for graduates by the Australian Financial Review and the Australian Association of Graduate Employers.

Victoria's Big Build in numbers:

  • $90 billion of transport projects being delivered
  • 165 major road and rail projects
  • 18,000 + people in jobs

Victoria's Big Build is generating thousands of local jobs for Victorians, in sectors ranging from construction and engineering to human resources and administration. As part of the Victorian Government's Local Jobs First policy, at least 10% of labour hours are allocated to trainees and apprentices. They are actively building our workforce from groups that are traditionally underrepresented in transport and construction, including:

  • Women
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
  • Refugees and asylum seekers
  • Individuals living with disability
  • Culturally and linguistically diverse individuals
  • People from disadvantaged backgrounds

Environment and sustainability:

They know it's important to Victorians that we keep communities healthy and protect the environment during our construction work. For each project we:

  • have a comprehensive health and safety management plan
  • ensure we're protecting the environment by putting in place safeguards and management systems to protect local plants and animals, and air, soil and water quality
  • require our industry partners to commit to using recycled materials

Our industry partners:

They partner with leading Australian and international construction and engineering companies to deliver Victoria's Big Build. They also partner with small and medium-sized local businesses. Construction partners are appointed following a robust and transparent procurement process for each project.

What Graduates Say About Them
  • Work-life balance. Training Opportunities. High-profile projects.
  • I love the culture of learning that the project embodies. Everyone I have worked with so far has been very receptive when I am honest about my flaws and say 'I don't know'. I also love that the project sees itself not just as a construction project, but as a social enterprise that aims to support its employees in living a happy and healthy life.
  • There are so many opportunities to participate in educational and self-development courses, making this graduate program extremely worthwhile.
  • Very positive environment facilitating growth as a new graduate.
  • There is a host of experience at the company with most of upper management coming from the private sector.
  • You aren't just treated as someone who doesn't know anything, you are given meaningful work that clearly shapes individual projects and the program as a whole. There is plenty of support from other members of your work group, your managers and the graduate program leads. The graduate cohort are also a really diverse and great group of people.
  • Under resourced and organisational systems and processes aren't fully in place, which leads to some disorganisation.
  • Not always included in discussions about my future involvement in tasks or rotations
  • Not much to dislike, although a bit of clarity on the grad program (i.e., our rotations, first communications with our manager/supervisor) could have been handled a little better.
  • High level work. Not much technical detail work.
  • From a graduate perspective, our rotations are quite short (6 months) and just as you're finding your groove with the team and building relationships you have to move into a new team. A necessity for exposure, but a burden nonetheless.
  • Can be overwhelming working on a large project- feeling lost at times
