Please tell us about promotion possibilities and fill us in on what it takes to move up the ranks.
It is all based on competency and performance. Perform well and you can move up.

Some people within the company have created standardised goals and methods for career progression.

I think that the possibilities are a bit unclear, when speaking to other people who are slightly ahead of me they don't seem satisfied with how clear the criteria is for progression

Two year graduate program, after which you can become a professional.

Career progression is possible through the ability for the team to fill the responsibilities that you would leave as the result of a promotion. There is high pressure to stay within a technical discipline in early career due to low graduate intake and availability.

You have to show interest, experience and dedication and can be promoted to positions that suit your goals

It's a big company and there is opportunity to move around. We also have a flexible but somehow structured process for discussing performance and goals etc. These chats are used to check that you're happy with what you're doing or if you want something different to work on. When you feel you're ready you can also use this time to tall about promotion and whether there is any gap in your skills vs what is expected.

I am almost 1.5 years in Graduate position and haven't promoted yet, my expectation was less than a year as the director told me at the interview day, but it didn't happen.

I appreciate the structure of thrive conversation that allows for giving priority to career development and progression.

I want to move away from the graduate role but it has been a bit of a struggle to communicate this and get the work to progress further. It is still really vague regarding what is needed to progress off the graduate program

EPN and the graduate program is great for explaining this

- Engineer: finish graduate program and complete project work independently - Senior Engineer: usually 10+ years of experience and must be able to review others' work - Engineering Manager: 12+ years of experience and have experience leading teams

In 6 months I've seen 3 out of the 9 in my team receive promotions. It is clear that solid, consistent and hard work gets recognised and allows you to move up.

The possible promotion and development opportunities has been made clear to me as quite expansive with different pathways I can take depending on how I want my career to go and what responsibilities I want, and also the chartership status and other accreditations available. For me to move up through these positions, I have to demonstrate my competencies as an engineer ranging from project management, technical expertise and communication skills. Depending on how my manager feels I am developing will determine how quickly I progress to more responsibilities.

There are graduates from years prior who have moved up quite quickly, there are clear progression charts available and development and training opportunities to help you get there

NSW RAC team especially have a different progression criteria to the rest of the country. We have to fill out a lot of competencies and checklists, and now even a timetable of how we will reach Engineering Australia chartership when we are only really eligible from 5+ years of experience and valid CPD hours from most recent 2-3 years. Not sure why there's this extra stress, pressure and time (some graduates take more than 2 years to progress, which gives even more stress and pressure to have to think about their career progression as well as chartership at the same time rather than as stepping stones)

Seems to be difficult to progress to senior which may deter people from sticking around

Discuss with supervisor to determine career trajectory and what you want to achieve. Supervisor will assist in reaching your goals.
