About this course

Bioethics is the study of the ethical issues raised by advances in scientific knowledge and technical ability in medicine, genetics and biological sciences. It addresses moral issues in topics such as: life and death decision-making in the context of healthcare, health related social policies and laws and the role of technology in promoting collective and individual wellbeing.

The Graduate Certificate of Bioethics is particularly well suited if you are a health care professional or scientist who faces complex ethical issues in your working life, if you are involved in the development of public policy and law, or if you are wishing to explore issues of public concern. The course has been designed in ways to suit both those with little or no prior educational background in ethics or philosophy, and philosophy graduates with an interest in further studies of bioethics.

In this bioethics course you will learn to think critically about the ethical issues raised, and to develop independent and well-informed views about the ethical and philosophical questions addressed.

An interdisciplinary approach is taken to key issues including bioethical principles, ethical theory, questions of life and death, ethical issues in patient care, human-research ethics, legal and policy issues in bioethics, and public health ethics.

The teaching staff have an excellent reputation for research and teaching, and they are active and prominent contributors to public debate and professional discussions about a variety of bioethical issues. The Monash University Centre for Human Bioethics is one of the world's top-eight bioethics centres.

Upon completion you will be equipped for careers in life sciences, public health, journalism, public policy and healthcare.

The Graduate Certificate in Bioethics can be taken as a standalone degree, while also providing an entry point in the Master of Bioethics.
