Graduate Opportunities with the Australian Shipbuilder Austal

With graduate opportunities as exciting and diverse as the ships we build, Austal is looking for our next team of shipbuilders to help deliver the world’s most advanced ships.

Imagine telling your friends and family that you have launched your career as an Austal Graduate, contributing to the design, construction and sustainment of defence and commercial vessels – either under construction or operating around the world.

Austal is the Australian Shipbuilder, global defence prime contractor and maritime technology partner of choice; designing, constructing and supporting revolutionary defence and commercial vessels for the world’s leading operators.

With four modern shipyards located in Australia, the USA, Philippines and Vietnam – and strategically located regional service centres and sales offices - Austal offers outstanding opportunities for enthusiastic graduates to develop valuable skills and expertise in a fast-growing global industry.

To meet current and future demand for multi-disciplined leaders across defence and commercial programs, we have established a comprehensive new graduate scheme for:

  • Mechanical Engineers
  • Electrical Engineers
  • Mechatronics Engineers
  • Naval Architects
  • Business / Commerce / Economics graduates
  • Computer Science

Providing you with valuable exposure to all areas of our business, the Austal Graduate Scheme includes periodic placements across multiple functions - including Production, Procurement, Design, Engineering, Commercial, and Programs - at our Australian, Philippines and Vietnam operations.

In this 3 year program, you could live and work across multiple Austal sites within Australia and the Philippines.

Your first placement will be at any one of the above locations, so you must be entirely flexible and prepared to relocate.

Applicants should have either graduated in the last 12 months or be graduating (completing studies) in 2020.

Please note that candidates must have full Australian Working Rights, or currently hold a Visa that will allow you to live and work in Australia for a minimum of 3 years after commencement of employment. We regret that we are unable to offer sponsorship at this time.

We are looking for graduates who are passionate about their degree, and passionate about shipbuilding. We want people who don’t ever want to stop learning. If you can use your excellent communication skills to collaborate effectively across all functions of our business; use your integrity and problem-solving skills to provide innovative solutions for our customers, and aspire to deliver excellence in everything you do; then the Austal Graduate Scheme is the right fit for you.

What Graduates Say About Them
  • I have been given lots of flexibility on how to approach my projects/tasks, this offers great learning experience that I'm allowed to work autonomously instead of being micromanaged all the time.
  • Flexible work hours, as long as you complete the requisite hours required. 9 day fortnight work weeks are handy Rotations around different departments allowing good business insight into the various business activities Good work culture - someone is always willing to lend a hand Variety of task - the various departments have variety so you will never get bored Challenging - there is a lot of opportunities for the organisation as we transition to a new ERP system, there are a lot of new challenges to over come
  • 1. Flexible start and finish times 2. Get to work on boats - depending on task 3. Challenging tasks 4. Over 30 years of experience 5. Undergoing digital transformation so plenty of opportunity to grow and progress
  • Opportunity to learn and work with some of the best in the Ship Building Industry.
  • Facilities are pretty old. The nature of "winning contracts to stay employed" is a bit scary. So Job security is an issue especially when you have a mortgage.
  • The area of improvement would be the information of induction could have been structured better. There was a few confusing moments at the beginning due to lack of information provided.
  • Communication gaps between different departments. Therefore, it’s a struggle to find documents and lessons on previous projects. Data management and engagement are the weak point but company is already working to improve them.
  • Only now transitioning into contemporary digital solutions. Spreadsheets.
  • Could be overwhelming at times with some of the expectations.
