The Bank OCBC NISP story

Bank OCBC NISP traces its heritage back in 1941 when it was known as NV Nederlandsch Indische Spaar En Deposito Bank. Karmaka Surjaudaja and Lelarati Lukman laid the foundation for the company’s current status as one of the top ten banks in Indonesia. Bank OCBC NISP transitioned into a commercial bank from a savings bank in 1967, became a foreign exchange bank in 1990 and went public on Indonesia Stock Exchange in 1994.

The current name reflects Bank OCBC NISP’s association with Singaporean company OCBC Bank, which has been the majority shareholder since 2005. OCBC Bank owns an 85.1 per cent stake in the company. Bank OCBC NISP has expanded to more than 330 branch offices in 61 cities across Indonesia, following the Singaporean bank’s decision in 2011 to consolidate their operations in the country.

The recruitment process

The company may process your application within two days or up to more than four weeks. If you apply to be part of the Banking Academy Programme, the process may include different personality tests with around 20 to 30 questions. For those who applied for management associate roles through campus job fairs, the process may take more than four weeks. Applicants may have multiple interviews with the HR manager and division head. Shortlisted candidates should be prepared to present a case in front of board members.

Career prospects

Bank OCBC NISP’s internship programme only accepts students in their final year of studies. The company requires prospective interns to have excellent academic records and active participation in extracurricular activities.

Fresh graduates can choose to join the bank either through the Banking Academy Programme (BAP) or the Young Bankers Programme (YBP). BAP offers two customised career paths in IT and sales. The BAP for sales doesn’t require a specific university degree, but applicants must have a minimum GPA of 2.75 out of 4.00. BAP for IT professionals must have a minimum GPA of 3.00 out of 4.00 and a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Mathematics or Management Information System. They also should be competent in one or more programming languages.

YBP takes on a more general approach. Fresh graduates with bachelor’s or master’s degrees can apply if they have a minimum GPA of 3.00 out of 4.00. The 18-month programme involves job rotations and mentoring sessions with senior managers.

Remuneration

Bank OCBC NISP’s interns earn around IDR 2.89 million to IDR 3.24 million per month on average. Management associates’ monthly average salaries range from IDR 7.72 million to 10.90 million. Credit analysts at the bank earn between IDR 4.93 million and IDR 5.26 million per month on average.

Some employees reportedly receive dental and vision reimbursements, updated training every few months and annual bonuses. The company doesn’t pay overtime work based on their experience.

The culture

Bank OCBC NISP’s ONe PIC serves as the guidelines for workplace culture and behaviour among employees. Some employees feel that ONe PIC creates confusion and a disconnect between certain departments. Most employees, however, acknowledge a generally friendly work environment where people exchange constructive feedback.

The competition

Bank’s OCBC NISP’s biggest competitors are PT Bank Rakyat Indonesia (Persero) Tbk, PT Bank Mandiri (Persero) Tbk, PT Bank Negara Indonesia (Persero) Tbk, PT Bank Tabungan Negara (Persero) Tbk, PT Bank Central Asia Tbk, PT Bank CIMB Niaga Tbk, Bank BTPN, Panin Bank and PT Bank Maybank Indonesia.

Social contributions

The company continually gives back to the community through education, environment and social campaigns. One Day Workshops have educated more than 2,000 students about financial literacy. Since 2003, employees have voluntarily donated blood. The Go Green campaign oversees the bank’s environment-friendly efforts.

The vibe of the place

Bank OCBC NISP’s connection with Singaporean company OCBC Bank guarantees job security, but you must be willing to endure a slow career progression. Further studies such as a master’s degree can improve your chances of negotiating higher pay. You should be ready to work long hours without overtime pay.

The ONe PIC work culture also requires prospective employees to have a customer-first attitude, so those without an inherent ability to please clients may find it difficult to thrive at the company.
