Patient / Nurse ratio makes enjoying the job very difficult. It's so transactional because I have to rush off to the next job. Very little time for genuine patient care outside of essential clinical care and very little human interaction for graduate nurse. Without competencies makes job very difficult but no allocated time to do competencies, have to do in own personal time with no pay (grossly unfair).

I am a scrub/scout nurse and despite being a new graduate on the New Graduate Fellowship program, I have not been supported particularly well by the program. There was an initial flurry of training to get my cohort to a "functional" level but after that, we have been basically ignored. Our professional development, skills development and evolution of our nursing practise has been largely left to chance and our own ability to try and make opportunities; none are offered. Consequently my development in this discipline is largely stalled and I don't see a pathway for progression.

Checking medications for surgery - setting up the theatre - checking our setups for the day are correct - trying to find trolley's and fighting people for them - talking with the doctor about the list, if there is anything specific needs. - scrubbing for cases ranging from 15 minutes per case to 10 hours or more depending on what you're doing. - completing a large amount of paperwork. - patient positioning and safety. - taking on new staff and students for teaching. - managing the theatre and running the list. - handing the patient over. This is some of the day to day responsibilities I can think of off the top of my head.
