The most rewarding aspect of my job lies in witnessing the tangible value I contribute to clients, backed by the company's appreciative recognition.

What's your job about?

Visagio is a Management Consulting firm that specialises in business transformation. I’ve been part of Visagio’s Digital Acceleration team, where we centred on tackling business challenges through short-term and high-impact solutions.

I joined Visagio intending to gain valuable industrial experience in Data Science, and my professional growth here has been incredibly fulfilling as I’ve witnessed significant professional growth. I’ve acquired many new skills and knowledge through diverse projects since I started six months ago.

The projects that I’ve been involved in are data-driven solutions utilising low-code development platforms. My routine involved a lot of collaborations with project team members to identify gaps, brainstorm innovative ideas and research and implement solutions. Some noteworthy projects I’ve contributed to:

  • The creation of an app that streamlined the data collection process.
  • Designing insightful company performance tracking dashboards.
  • Automating previously manual MS Excel spreadsheet processes.

One of my favourite parts of my role is being involved in the entire solution development lifecycle. This hands-on engagement allows me to witness firsthand the tangible value my contributions bring to fruition. The satisfaction derived from seeing an idea evolve into a practical and impactful solution is an immense motivator, inspiring me to strive for excellence consistently.

What's your background?

I was born and raised in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. In 2019, when I started my Data Science and Finance degree at UWA, I had not imagined I would stay here upon graduation. However, over time, I came to love Perth for its natural beauty, especially the captivating beaches. You can bet I'll be heading to the beaches on most, if not all, sunny weekends. Snorkelling, picnicking, or simply chilling with a good book—it's my ultimate escape.

Growing up in Malaysia gave me the ability to speak multiple languages, which was a pain during my childhood but is now a valuable asset. I'm fluent in English, Malay/Bahasa, Mandarin, and Cantonese. Each of these languages serves as a gateway to diverse conversations and connections.

Embarking on my journey at Visagio in February 2023 has been a rewarding experience, and I've thoroughly enjoyed my time with the company. Reflecting on my initial corporate venture outside of Visagio, I discovered that I am passionate about business transformation and process enhancements.

Securing a graduate position at Visagio was undoubtedly one of the most competitive in the industry. However, when the opportunity presented itself, I was convinced that the role would provide substantial exposure to diverse business transformation projects and offer an environment for exponential growth in my technical skills. I am confident that Visagio has not only met but exceeded my expectations. Throughout my time here, I've had access to a wealth of knowledge and practical insights that I have considered a big part of my professional growth.

Could someone with a different background do your job?

Definitely! One of the coolest parts about the company is that we have people from all walks of life. Visagio boasts diverse employees spanning various profiles. In consultancy, interacting with clients of varying backgrounds fuels continuous learning. As long as you're eager to learn, there are opportunities around.

Projects within the company require varied roles featuring diverse technical skills. Different backgrounds enrich the mix, contributing to impactful outcomes. Individuals from different backgrounds can excel in my position, given its emphasis on innovation, idea generation, and problem-solving. It's not about replication but adding your distinct touch to Visagio's knowledge and expertise.

What's the coolest thing about your job?

The most rewarding aspect of my job lies in witnessing the tangible value I contribute to clients, backed by the company's appreciative recognition.

My day-to-day involvement encompasses a dynamic range of activities, from engaging with clients to comprehend their challenges to brainstorming innovative solutions and embedding them within their teams. While these processes can pose considerable challenges, especially in developing digital solutions and managing client expectations, the support of those around me eases the journey.

Experienced consultants readily sharing their knowledge and insights have also made the learning curve a lot smoother. What truly stands out is the sense of accomplishment upon completing a substantial task and seeing the direct impact of my efforts. These small wins always charge me up, and I genuinely enjoy the work I do.

What are the limitations of your job?

At Visagio, consultants manage project-specific responsibilities. While workloads for projects are defined at project initiation, unforeseen dynamics might occasionally demand extra hours. Overall working hours are typically stable. Beyond client tasks, there's a culture of encouraging and supporting the execution of ideas to enhance the company. Taking up another role, though, highlights challenges such as balancing project demands and managing time efficiently.

The initiative aspect can vary based on individual preferences. I find immense satisfaction in exploring various ideas within a corporate setting and having a sense of ownership. However, given the absence of established task lists, this perspective might differ for others.

3 pieces of advice for yourself when you were a student...

  1. Don’t hesitate to apply for internships during university, even if they don’t seem like the dream job. The early experience opens doors post-graduation and offers a glimpse into the real world. Sometimes, they could also reveal disinterest in a particular field and expedite passion discovery.
  2. As new responsibilities arise, the shift from being a carefree student to self-supporting isn’t simple. Yet, there’s a gratifying moment when you realise you’re no longer the broke uni kid - the Boost Juice becomes feasible, and it’s liberating.
  3. Finally, cherish the flexibility of university life. Do the weekday picnics and indulge in impromptu plans - these moments are fleeting, and the memories are priceless.
