Pros & Cons

  • Amazing people, great flexibility and work-life balance, interesting and meaningful work.
  • Lots of opportunities to learn and discover. Colleagues recognize level of experience and adapt tasks as required. Tasks are properly scaffolded. Opportunity to partake in occasional site visits and other practical experiences.
  • Friendliness and cooperation along with quality learning opportunity.
  • Getting to be a part of a hard-working and exciting team that has a lot of visibility across all the different sectors that we work in, and getting to work with people on varied projects because of that.
  • The working culture is inclusive and encourages you to ask questions. Managers will listen to your concerns and ask for constant feedback on your work profile.
  • Sometimes such a wide array of options makes it difficult to really specialise in an area. Also, our work is mainly contractual project work, therefore there is little room to work on my technical engineering foundation.
  • The people I work closely with are interstate so I only communicate through teams.
  • Not many people know about Ventia outside, so it's very less heard.
  • Software takes a while to be installed through the approval process.
  • For the scope of work that we do, our brand/marketing team is not particularly large.

From what I have seen from other people who have been in the graduate program, being a part of the program provides a lot of opportunities to work alongside multiple people in different roles, gaining experience and skills in ways that can help you move upwards internally.

Corporate Social Responsibility
I was a part of a team that played in the Bennelong Cup, a charity touch football competition sponsored by my company. Later this year, both in my current and next rotation, I will be working on my company's Reconciliation Action Plan and the implementation of it. Other initiatives have been finding new ways of working to support workers with disabilities, and developing more sustainable business practices to create better community outcomes

In the office, everyone is supportive and consistently offer assistance or advice whenever it might be needed. This friendliness absolutely extends into after-hours. People stress the importance of a work-life balance consistently.

The company takes diversity very seriously and has recently committed to the 40:40:20 rule - 40% women, 40% men, 20% either. Additionally, the company takes the hiring of indigenous people very seriously.

Job responsibilities vary day to day. As a Graduate Engineer who is focusing on project engineering and management, every day is different. It can go from technical and practical work such as site inspection, client meeting , technical engineering and AutoCAD review. Alternatively, it can be non-technical such as attending meetings, writing reports and review documents for projects.

Managers are extremely open, and approachable and always give you the time within the company. I have had numerous interactions with all levels of the business, including many mentoring sessions with the CEO.

Office Work Environment
Each office is very different within the company. Some are very corporate, whilst some are quite small and intimate. However, each has a life of their own, and each contract manager does their best to create a fun and involved environment within each. The North Sydney Office has an incredible view from the lunchroom that overlooks the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Again, depending on the office the dress code can vary but typically is business/business-casual.

Recruitment

Recruitment
There were several hurdles such as a phone interview, then online psychometric testing, and video interviews. After I passed these, the final assessment was a full-day interview process at an assessment centre where the company met us face-to-face and saw how we behaved in groups. The day ran smoothly and every person I spoke to was extremely approachable, which helped with the nerves.

Within the company, I have had a chance to be trained within a number of software packages that benefit me and my work. I have learnt how to use the Microsoft Power Platform packages, a simulation software called AnyLogic, and had assistance in a Python coding course.

Work Hours
I have worked within 3 different contracts at my company, and each has been okay with me being flexible with my start and finish hours. As long as I do my 8 hours a day, I am able to start at whichever time that best suits me. This is ideal for somebody who has after work commitments.
